Carbon reimagined
The user interface, as we knew it, is evolving. It will be generated on demand, reshaping itself to context, and at times disappearing altogether as an agent acts on the user’s behalf. All the while the interfaces we’ve relied on for decades will continue to hold their place, where consistency and predictability matter most. The future isn’t one replacing the other, but blending what’s proven with what’s possible.
Carbon’s next major release, v12, will deliver a new expression, designed to hide complexity until complexity becomes useful. To reveal depth in sequence. To progressively disclose the right action, at the right time, guiding users quickly to understand where they are, what matters, and what to do next. To deliver through a stronger hierarchy with connected tasks brought together through motion. The design system intends to enable more clarity for software that moves at the speed of human intuition.
Guide, our core principle
This next major version is crafted with purpose, anchored by one belief that steers how we move toward v12. To guide.
To guide is to partner. Every IBM product is a medium between humanity and machine, between intent and outcome. Our job is to understand a user’s intent and deliver it, with ease of use, clarity of path, and the steady removal of obstacles between here and there. As software becomes AI-native, this discipline matters more, not less. In a generative system, to guide is no longer to order pre-built paths, rather it is to shape and constrain what can happen at all, in partnership with the person on the other side. We ensure a clear signal of intent: secondary actions, deeper features, and necessary complexity are real, but they are not the signal, and they must never be confused for it. To guide is to lead. Quickly, deliberately, toward outcome.
Next meaningful shifts
Carbon has successfully powered over a decade of enterprise software. Carbon v12 is evolving as a design system to pioneer what comes next in software experience. When v12 launches, it will deliver leaps forward in the following surfaces:
New visual expression
At the heart of Carbon v12 is a new visual expression. The evolved expression is crafted by the simple idea that complexity should wait until it’s useful. Hierarchy, contrast, and motion work together to surface the right action at the right time, so people spend less time figuring things out and more time moving forward.
Motion
Expect to see motion thoroughly infused in every aspect the Carbon Design System, from micro-interactions to full page transitions. Motion will be used to show users where they are and connect that understanding to what comes next, making it an incredible instrument to “guide”.
Layouts
Layouts, as a framework, will become a core part of Carbon with ready-to-use modular blocks. Shaped as reusable examples and compositions for the situations users encounter most. These starting points carry the design system by default, so teams and agents ship with the structure already correct.
AI readiness
Carbon is evolving to ensure the design system is built for the AI era. Carbon is actively improving our infrastructure to work for AI, engineering it to be indexed, queried, and intelligently surfaced by coding assistants and developer agents. In v12, expect to see encoded AI design intelligence equipped with reusable instructions, agent skills, and guardrails that produce layouts, propose patterns, and enforce the standard automatically.
Tokens and theming
Carbon will adopt industry-standard naming conventions for token management, simplifying our approach and also unlocking significant benefits for open source themeability and more precise AI agent utilization.
Product-centered components
With the upcoming release of v12, we are making our internal Carbon for Products library, consisting of 21 core components and 24 complex patterns, fully available to the open-source community. This rollout will include comprehensive usage guidance, a complete Figma library, and robust code hardened by years of rigorous enterprise production use.
For everyone building with the Carbon Design System, inside IBM and across open source, this evolution is about greater leverage. Carbon is establishing a world where your most innovative ideas become reality, faster than ever before. The boundaries of what’s possible disappear. Developers and designers work in perfect harmony, turning concepts into breathtaking experiences that delight users. Carbon v12 will define how you engineer software tomorrow, ensuring that as workflows evolve toward intelligent execution, your frontend architecture is already there, leading the way.
